An Overview

A Conditional Access System, or CAS, is a type of system used in Internet and television broadcasts in order to restrict unauthorized users from accessing channels or services that they have not paid for and allow subscribers who have paid for services to access the specific services they purchased.

CAS stands for conditional access system, which is a digital mode of transmitting TV channels trough a set-top box (STB). The transmission signals are encrypted and viewers need to buy a set-top box to receive and decrypt the signal.

Conditional access systems work by encrypting all transmission signals and sending entitlement messages that inform a user’s receiving device which content it is authorized to decrypt.

In order to protect the content and rights, digital TV operators turn to the technology known as conditional access or CA. Conditional access, as the name itself suggests, provides the service of controlling the access to digital television to people who are or are not subscribers. Their end goal is simple and clear – encrypting the channel signal and decrypting it only for the viewers who meet the required conditions. Besides the most common use by digital TV operators, conditional access can also be applied to digital radio and data broadcasts, non-broadcast information and interactive services. The equipment and software required for the system is supplied by the CAS provider, so that the broadcasters can incorporate it in their own equipment.

Every CA system is made up of the following fundamental components: a Subscriber Management System, a Subscriber Authorization System, a security module and a set-top box. Even though securing the content is of outmost importance to pay TV operators, the development and maintenance of a conditional access system can be extremely time consuming and ineffective. That is why operators entrust the safety of their content to companies specializing in pay TV protection technology.

The global Conditional Access System (CAS) market is valued at USD 1.09 billion by the end of 2023, growing at a CAGR of 8% during 2019-2025. Normally, the systems are installed and connect at the incoming receiving end of audio and video such as digital set-tops box of the consumers. One of the main foremost factors fueling the conditional control system market is the analog to digital transformation of the TV transmission in developing countries of the Asia Pacific.

In order to offer subscription services in customer information, the smart cards acts as an encryption deciphering operator. The penetration of Pay TV is augmenting the CAS market for STB (set-top box) hardware. Nevertheless, advances in product and content sharing technologies are expected to explore new opportunities for the market players in near future. Furthermore, the emergence of television broadcasting services and condition access module is anticipated to grow during the forecast period. The expansion of condition access module and broadcasting services is growing due to rise in applications of the CAS in smart or advanced televisions that are contributing towards the market growth. Moreover, in-built CAS in the set-top box are anticipated to drive the global CAS market. The adoption of internet services such as IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and OTT (Over-the-Top) is fueling the growth of the market.

A digital headend architecture and full service network are provided to selectively demodulate and decode a variety of digital and analog feeds into baseband signals or pass digital programming through the headend. CAS takes a vital part authenticating digital programming.

History and Current Market Trends- CAS & DRM

Until the late 1950s, the TV industry had a single business model: Sell advertising or product placement to pay for programming. With the gradual introduction of pay-TV in the 60s, this model began to change.

When it comes to charging for content and protecting the associated revenues, the basic requirement was (and still is) access control, which was achieved by employing a technology called conditional access. But what is conditional access you ask? Well, conditional access is a system that content providers use to protect and monetize their content by controlling who has access to it. It is commonly used on satellite or cable pay-TV services to regulate the contract between provider and user. Conditional access systems (CAS) work by:

  1. Encrypting content – Anybody can receive the signal transmitted by the content provider, but various protocols are used to encrypt the content so it appears scrambled (that is, unwatchable).
  2. Defining conditions of access – The user must meet certain conditions (such as paying for TV services) to have the content decrypted.
  3. Checking authorization – Entitlement messages are sent to the user’s receiver (such as a set top box) to inform it which content it can decrypt.
  4. Decrypting content – The receiver has the capacity to decrypt the signal and does so when it receives authorization that the conditions have been met.

So, in this situation, only subscribers paying their bills (that is, meeting the ‘conditions of access’) can access and watch the content being transmitted. Pay-TV operators adopted solutions created by CAS vendors to manage content protection and ensure that they and other rights holders could monetize their assets.

The conditional access (CA) model is still used for transmission of digital video broadcasting over satellite and terrestrial networks, as well as telco IPTV (or “managed IPTV”), although they both have been complemented with digital rights management security for OTT (streaming video over the Internet).

Every CA system is made up of the following fundamental components: a Subscriber Management System, a Subscriber Authorization System, a security module and a set-top box.

Encryption of content streams via conditional access systems (CAS) typically in cable, satellite and IPTV systems to control customer access to channels and services; or via digital rights management (DRM) typically in OTT content items delivered to consumer devices.

CAS & DRM Feature & Recommendations:

We should consider the following main features when we select Conditional Access System (CAS):

SECURITY: The highest content security using a totally safe encryption system in all of the CAS involved parts. Depending on the service, the security may or not require the use of the smart card.

INTEGRAL SYSTEM: The system is ready to protect all the services a global operator can offer (broadcast TV, IPTV, VoD, on the net recordings and local disc recordings) from a single point. The system features courier functions, paternal control, EPG and rationalization.

SCALABILITY: Exceedingly efficient bandwidth use aimed to the massive rights sending, which allows the operator to reach the maximum scalability on the provision of service. Our solution is perfectly valid for those growing projection clients, and the initial investment is 100% usable.

FLEXIBILITY: CAS uses DVB protocols, which allows an easy integration with multiple digital head ends and STB terminals. Provides a simple interface which is easily integrated with the most extended Billing systems on the market. Offers a total flexibility on the right combination and subscription (PPV and PPT) in order to create new pay TV products and promotions, which can be marketed with prepaid and postpaid business models.

IMPLANTATION SIMPLICITY: Receivers: Designed for a fast implantation on all sort of receivers. Back office: Simple integration with the subscriber management system (SMS) because of being based on the web service interface.

EASY TO USE: The CAS has a very friendly web interface. It’s so simple to work with this system that from the very first moment even the operators will be able to execute the most complex tasks.

COST EFFECTIVE: CAS has to cost-effective as we have to pay subscription time to time.

UP-GRADATION, DEBUGGING: We should get free up-gradation and debugging of CAS.

FUTURE ORIENTED: CAS will be future ready.

FEASIBILITY STUDY: THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO CONSIDER.

FAQ’s about Digital Cable TV Headend

Digital cable is a type of cable television that uses digital signals instead of analog. Because it uses digital signals it has many advantages over the older analog cable tv.

Digital TV provides a better viewing experience compared to analog. There’s no signal loss the further you are from the transmitter, and both audio and video are sent through the same signal. Although some people still use analog, it’s considered an outdated technology.

A Digital Headend is a new revolution in cable TV industry. Digital Headend changed the whole phenomenon of cable TV industry by increasing the number of services. A large number of services can be run on a digital headend. Aslo digital headend reduced the bandwidth use with better pitcher quality.

A headend is a distribution center, basically. It works by distributing the signals so that receiving devices can pick them up. A cable headend typically has satellite dishes that receive the signals from the satellite and redistribute them to the house hold.

Digital cable has many advantages over analog cable. Because the signal is digital the picture quality is dramatically improved. The sound quality is also greatly improved. Besides having better audio and video quality you will get more channels.
